Home Care Options for Students with Disabilities (Ontario)
Live Free Zoom Presentation – March 9 at 1:00 PM
Many students with disabilities require personal support or nursing care while attending university or college. Ontario’s home care system can be complex and difficult to navigate.
This live Zoom presentation is designed for Student Accessibility Services teams across Ontario. The goal is to help your team better understand available home care options and support students during school and after graduation.
The session is presented by Hibaq Abdi, BSW, MSW, a social worker practicing since 2018. She has worked with clients navigating home care and community-based supports across Ontario. She has also used home care services her entire life. She has self-managed her care through Ontario’s Direct Funding program for over 20 years (attendant care) and has managed her own nursing support through the Family-Managed Home Care program since 2019.
This combined professional and lived experience provides practical, real-world insight into Ontario’s home care system.
What Your Team Will Learn:
* Overview of Ontario’s home care models
* Direct Funding (self-managed attendant care)
* Family-Managed Home Care (self-managed nursing services/PSW services)
* Agency-based home care services
* Supportive housing options
* Attendant outreach services
* Eligibility pathways
* Transition planning for students
This session will equip your Student Accessibility Services team with clear, practical information to better guide students who require community-based home care services.
