About the event

What Changes When Your Child With a Disability Turns 18?

When a child with a disability turns 18, families may suddenly face a new adult system — and many parents do not realize how much can change. Child-based programs may end, adult benefits may require new applications, medical care may shift from pediatric to adult providers, and parents may no longer automatically have access to information or decision-making authority.

This webinar is designed for parents and caregivers who want to better understand what to look out for before their child becomes an adult. We will go over key transition areas including guardianship and consent, adult financial supports, medical transitions, education and employment options, equipment funding, home care and respite, and future housing planning.

You will learn about important changes such as ODSP, Developmental Services Ontario, the Disability Tax Credit, RDSPs, adult medical referrals, post-secondary accessibility supports, day programs, Direct Funding, Family-Managed Home Care, supportive housing, and other adult disability-related resources.

The goal of this webinar is to help parents understand what may stop, what may start, and what needs to be prepared before their child turns 18. This session is general information only and is intended to help families feel more prepared when moving from child and youth services into adult systems.
