Facing a sudden crisis without enough money for basic needs can be overwhelming. In Ontario, emergency assistance offers short-term financial help to people who find themselves in urgent situations like eviction, safety concerns, or family violence. This support aims to cover essential costs such as food and housing, helping individuals and families regain stability quickly.

What Is Emergency Assistance in Ontario?

Emergency assistance is a temporary financial program run by the Government of Ontario through local Ontario Works offices. It provides short-term aid, usually lasting up to 48 days, to people who are in a crisis and cannot afford basic necessities. The program is designed for those who are not currently receiving Ontario Works or the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP).

This support is meant to address immediate needs during emergencies, such as:

  • Facing eviction or homelessness

  • Experiencing family violence or safety risks

  • Humanitarian situations requiring urgent help

The goal is to prevent hardship while individuals work toward longer-term solutions.

Who Can Apply for Emergency Assistance?

To qualify for emergency assistance, applicants must:

  • Live in Ontario

  • Be experiencing an emergency that threatens their basic needs

  • Not be receiving Ontario Works or ODSP benefits at the time of application

Applicants must provide proof of their emergency situation and financial need. For example, someone facing eviction might need to show an eviction notice or a letter from a landlord.

How Much Financial Support Is Available?

The amount of financial assistance depends on household size and specific needs but generally aligns with Ontario Works rates. For instance, a single person may receive about $733 per month to cover food and shelter costs. Families receive higher amounts based on the number of dependents.

In addition to financial aid, approved applicants may get prescription drug coverage through a temporary drug card, helping with medical expenses during the crisis.

How to Apply for Emergency Assistance

Applications can be submitted in two main ways:

  • Online: Applicants with a Social Insurance Number (SIN), email, and phone number can apply through the Ontario government’s online portal. This method is fast and convenient.

  • In Person: Those without the required online information can visit a local Ontario Works office to apply. Staff there can assist with the application process.

Once approved, payments are issued quickly, usually by direct deposit or cheque, to ensure timely support.

What to Expect After Applying

After submitting an application, the local Ontario Works office reviews the case to confirm eligibility. If approved, the financial support typically lasts up to 48 days. Extensions may be granted depending on the situation, but emergency assistance is not intended as a long-term solution.

Applicants are encouraged to work with caseworkers to explore other support programs or employment opportunities to improve their financial stability.
