Facing a sudden crisis without enough money for essentials like food or housing can be overwhelming. If you live in Ontario, emergency assistance offers temporary financial support to help you through tough times. This post explains who qualifies for emergency assistance, what kind of support you can expect, and how the program works.

What Is Emergency Assistance in Ontario?

Emergency assistance provides short-term financial help for people in urgent need. It is designed to cover basic costs such as food and shelter when you face a crisis. The support is temporary and aims to stabilize your situation until you can find a more permanent solution.

The amount you receive depends on your situation but usually does not exceed what Ontario Works provides. For example:

  • A single person may receive about $733 per month for food and shelter.

  • Families with children may get more to cover additional needs.

  • Support can last up to 48 days, with possible extensions depending on your circumstances.

Who Qualifies for Emergency Assistance?

To be eligible, you must:

  • Live in Ontario (not be a visitor or tourist).

  • Be in a crisis or emergency situation.

  • Lack enough money for essentials like food and housing.

Examples of qualifying emergencies include:

  • Facing eviction from your home.

  • Being in or leaving an abusive relationship.

  • Worrying about your personal safety.

  • Having emergency authorization to stay in Canada for humanitarian reasons, such as Ukrainian migrants arriving under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET).

You are not eligible if you already receive assistance from Ontario Works or the Ontario Disability Support Program.

How Emergency Assistance Works

If you think you qualify, you can apply through your local Ontario Works office. The process involves:

  • Providing details about your emergency and financial situation.

  • Showing proof of residency in Ontario.

  • Explaining why you need immediate help.

Once approved, you will receive financial support tailored to your needs. The support usually covers basic living costs and lasts for a limited time, often up to 48 days. In some cases, you may receive additional periods of support if your emergency continues.

What to Do Next

If you are in a crisis and need help, contact your local Ontario Works office to learn more about emergency assistance. Prepare to explain your situation clearly and provide any necessary documents. Remember, this support is temporary but can provide crucial relief during difficult times.
